Lines by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz
Mexican poet and scholar · c. 1648–1695
Juana Inés de Asbaje became a nun partly to be free to study, and built one of the largest libraries in New Spain. Her poems and letters defend women's right to learn.
Foolish men, who accuse women without reason, not seeing that you are the cause of the very thing you blame.
Hombres necios que acusáis / a la mujer, sin razón, / sin ver que sois la ocasión / de lo mismo que culpáis
Redondillas, lines 1–4
