Epictetus was born enslaved in Hierapolis and later taught philosophy in Nicopolis. His student Arrian wrote down his teaching; the Enchiridion is its handbook.
People are disturbed not by things, but by their opinions about things.
Ταράσσει τοὺς ἀνθρώπους οὐ τὰ πράγματα, ἀλλὰ τὰ περὶ τῶν πραγμάτων δόγματα.
